Fall Events at Xico!!!

We’ve been in planning mode all summer at Xico and we’ve come up with some fantastic artsy/cultural programs, workshops, exhibitions and more. Here is the full calendar of events happening at Xico and in the community in the next few months, (you can also find these on Facebook).

32nd Annual El Dia de los Muertos: A Celebration of Life Festival: Saturday November 5th, 11am to 6pm, West Lawn Dr. AJ Chandler Park (1 S. Arizona Ave, Chandler, AZ 85225). The festival features traditional music and dance by local performers, storytelling, children’s activities, folk arts and crafts, ethnic food, community altar, candle light procession. This year will feature the first annual Katrine/Katrina costume contest. The event is free to the public.

Workshops

  • Intro to Drawing Super Heroes and Villains with local artist Bettie Lake. Saturday August 27th 9am to 12pm at Xico (44 S. San Marcos Pl Chandler, AZ 85225). Start to draw your own comic book in this intro workshop. Open to Adults and Children ages 8 and up. Cost is $40 per person or $75 for two, must reserve in advance by calling 480-833-5875.
  • Decoupage Collage Boxes with local artist Gloria Casillas. Saturday, September 10th 10am-12pm at Xico (44 S. San Marcos Pl Chandler, AZ 85225). Learn to make your own useful and beautiful decoupage boxes. Open to Adults and Children ages 10 and up. Cost is $35 per person, must reserve in advance by calling 480-833-5875.
  • Gourd Jewelry with local artist Bettie Lake. Saturday October 8th 9am-12pm at Xico (44 S. San Marcos Pl Chandler, AZ 85225). This workshop is an introduction to the traditional craft of painting gourd jewelry. Sign up now to make your own piece of jewelry and learn how you can master this ancient art. Open to Adults and Teens ages 16 and up. Cost is $40 per person or $75 for two, must reserve in advance by calling 480-833-5875.
  • “What La Llorona Knew” with American Book Award Winner Stella Pope Duarte. Thursday, September 22, 6-8pm at Xico (44 S. San Marcos Pl Chandler, AZ 85225). Get in touch with La Llorona the official ghost of Latino history through poetry, sketching, and music. Open to Adults and Teens. Cost is $35 per person, must reserve in advance by calling 480-833-5875.

Exhibitions

  • Caras Amadas: Beloved Faces: August 12 to September 17, at Xico (44 S. San Marcos Pl Chandler, AZ 85225). This exhibition features portraits of individuals and groups that represent the Hispanic/Latino/Chicano community by local and regional artists. By telling the story of individual members of the Hispanic community, the exhibition will provide perspective on the community as a whole.
  • Indigenous Perspective: September 15 to December 1, at Estrella Mountain Community College (3000 North Dysart Road, Avondale 85392). This exhibition celebrating Hispanic and Native American Heritage Months will explore what it means to be indigenous to the Southwest. Local and regional artists will depict ways the indigenous peoples negotiate their identity among, within, and between cultures.
  • El Dia de los Muertos: A Celebration of Life Exhibition: September 24 to November 5 at Xico (44 S. San Marcos Pl Chandler, AZ 85225). This annual exhibition is produced in conjunction with Xico’s Dia de los Muertos: A Celebration of Life Festival. The artwork represents local and regional artists’ personal connections to the celebration. An opening reception will be held on October 14th from 5:30 to 9:00pm providing an opportunity for the public to meet the artists.
