Happy St. Patrick’s Day From Mexico

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, we present the history of the San Patricios (St. Patrick’s Battalion), a group of Irish Americans who fought on the Mexican side of the Mexican-American War. The Battalion are still recognized as heroes in Mexico so before you head out to the pub to drink green beer today, read up on the story:

Batallón de San Patricio: the Irish Heroes of Mexico is a detailed account of the story, including an explanation for why the Battalion joined the opposite side of the war (possibly due to racial and religious discrimination)

For extra fun, here’s a song by The Cheiftans and Ry Cooder honoring the San Patricios.
